1st Ever Greendale Holiday Home Decoration Contest!

GreendaleLife.com Exclusive

On a chilly December 17, holiday decoration judges Jason Dembosky, Joe Russ and Greendale Life publisher/editor Ron Faiola went around Greendale, photographing their favorite holiday home decorations. After a couple hours of notes and photos, the judges went back to Ricardo's for a pizza and picked the winners. (Click on the thumbnail image for the full size photo.)

BEST OVERALL

6430 Sycamore St. received two out of three votes for it's blinding display. The judges nicknamed it "The Clark Griswold House" based on the National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation movie. I'm sure WeEnergies' delight is tempered by the annoyed neighbors.

BEST RUNNER UP

This Greendale Original on 5579 Basswood St. got one vote because of the multiple Snoopy useage and sheer cramability on such a small lot. It takes two photos to get it all in!

BEST TRADITIONAL DECORATIONS

The folks at 5236 Roberts Dr. put up a classic display that reminded the judges of the good old days. The snow over the lights made it even better. Would make a nice Christmas card.

HONORABLE MENTION

These houses got close enough for top spot, but missed by that much. The first is 6562 Hill Ridge Dr., with its wide display that requires walking around the both sides of the house to take it all in. Impressive!

NOTABLE

Sweet second HM is on that far flung piece of Greendale, at 6133 Thorncrest Dr. The judges loved the landing lights for Santa's sleigh, but a few decorations were tipped over, and that nudged this fun display off the top spot.

NOTABLE

The third HM is at 5604 Churchway. There are lots of lights, not overly Christmas-y but the cocktail glass in the backyard was a hit.

BEST TREE LIGHTING

The judges weren't into white lights, but this house on Elberton Ave. did a great job on the white theme, especially getting such good coverage on the tree. Dangerous but spectacular! (One note, we have no idea what your address is - hope the pizza delivery and mailman do!)

RUNNER UP: BEST TREE LIGHTING

Risking broken bones to climb a tree to place holiday lights is impressive, 'nuff said. First up is 5347 Olympia Dr. and next is 5421 Mansfield Dr.

CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR

The judges liked these enough to stop and snap a photo, yet something left them out of the top spot... you be the judge. In order: 7312 Elstead Ave., 5400 Mansfield Dr., 6038 Oakwood St. and their neighbors at 6003 Oakwood St.

BEST NEIGHBORLY CO-OPERATION

This row house of three addresses on Dale Lane get a hearty handclasp and tip o' the hat for getting together on their decorations. Huzzah!

Thanks to Jason, Joe and Ron for a job well done! Hopefully this will become a yearly tradition with more judges, photo submissions and maybe some actual prizes! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Fall Colors 2008

Greendale Life publisher Ron Faiola took these photos of the wonderful fall colors around the Village in 2008.

4 Deer Cross Westway at Darnell

Greendale Life reader Mike Smith sent us these photos he took in July of 4 deer crossing Westway and Darnell. Mike wrote, "Just a reminder that when you're in Greendale, you're not far from the most pastoral of scenery." And how. Many thanks to Mike for sharing these!

The two adults prepare to cross the road, startling a cyclist.

One adult leads the 2 fawns across the road.

All four deer cross the road.

The deer safely head into the woods.
